Patriarchal Sabbath, 2023 (photography/video art)
Patriarchal Sabbath is an allegory of resistance against gender inequality. Women must unleash themselves from the “male-shaped symbolic order.” Contemporary, atheistic, consumer societies are, at heart, the same as religious theocracies; all good people, still controlled by patriarchal coding. Violence and abuse against women remains endemic. Sex, services, and supply; this is what the system requires from women. But to make genuine progress, women must create a new, female symbolic order that re-shapes social-cooperation, roles, and prejudices, builds new kinds of relationships among women, and puts our forgotten goddesses back on their pedestals.

Patriarchal Sabbath is a phase-shifted dream, sequenced from revolutionary surrealism’s mitochondrial DNA. Fragments from the psyches of the women surrealists who sought to unleash themselves from the “male-shaped symbolic order,” and through fascism, war, and exile, found their own voices and community. The figure of an anthropomorphic poodle dog, referencing its appearance in the works of Dorothea Tanning and Leonor Fini, acts as both an observer and latent spectre of liberation.

Simone de Beauvoir told us that for woman there is no other way out than to work for her liberation. In her video-art work “Simone de Beauvoir told me…” artist and filmmaker Monika K. Adler employs the art historical tradition of the ‘portrait-miniature’ to communicate and re-contextualise de Beauvoir’s iconic words through a cyclical mirror performance with an unexpected conclusion.
